Introduction

January 24, 2018

I write fantasy novels. I read fantasy novels. I like fantasy.

Fantasy allows me into other worlds, places where you can explore. People. Possibilities. Perspectives.

Landscapes can offer different lifestyles, societies, values where you discover the consequences of those differences.

It’s why I write differing forms of dystopian stories, I like to explore what happens in a world where the status quo has been thrown out of the window. Where the usual roles don’t apply and people must establish new ones or suffer the consequences of remaining with the old ones.

My stories are driven by issues that provoke debate, to get people thinking about causes and consequences.

You take a situation from the world around you; the environment, racism, immigration, corruption - and you investigate what might happen in extreme circumstances. It’s not new, writers have been creating such worlds for over a century and helping us to avoid them. Think about Orwell’s 1984 and look at the ways we actively try to prevent the excesses of that society. If it hadn’t been for Orwell, Big Brother wouldn’t be on our TV screens. (He has a lot to answer for!)

So you can expect posts on these topics. Plus my rants when things don’t go right, (often). When stories/novels get picked up, (rarely). When I ramble in the hope something coherent will form in my head, (like now).

And if you’re a writer, I’d love to hear from you. We can weep into our collective hankies and congratulate each other through gritted teeth if success appears.
